Using a systems approach, we investigate
ways in which we can improve society’s ability to address sustainability and food security injustice challenges, while establishing just and equitable solutions in urban agricultural landscapes.
We seek to understand why succeed and fail using a biological, social, and political lens, how to achieve sustainable and productive community gardens, and the role of urban agriculture in providing ecosystem services (i.e., community-building and food production), thereby improving the livelihoods of Black populations.
Agriculture is extremely vulnerable to climate change. As earth’s temperatures continue to rise, the yields of economically important crops will be reduced as the growth of unwanted weeds and pests continues to expand. Changes in precipitation patterns will also likely lead to crop failures and production declines. We focus on the impact of climate change and how an aquatic plant species, (Azolla spp.), can serve as a free organic nitrogen fertilizer in food systems.
